Okay, so here's the question. If I finish work in a wheat filed at point S, 1km from the path, which we'll call N, which is a straight path leading to a my house. The distance from N to my house is also 1km. I can walk through the wheat field at 7km/hr and can walk along the path at 9km/hr. Towards which point on the path should I walk to minimise the total time taken to reach my house? (As in distance from point N)

It's mathematics. Here's a hint on how to solve it. You need to use Pythagoras' theorem, that is, that a^2+b^2 = c^2

O.o I really don't get it. If the question is "how do I reach faster from S to H (the house) the easiest way is in a straight line thorugh the wheat field, ignoring the path:

H-----------N

S

Reference: H house N path S workplace

Distance from N to S and from N to H = 1km
Distance from S to H = 1.41km

Time to reach H if you go to the path and then to the house: 15 minutes (aprox)
Time to reach H if you go in a straight line from S to H : 9 minutes (aprox)

You don't have to go directly diagonal to the house. You could always go diagonal to a certain point along the path. That is the answer to finding the way you need to walk...

Added after 48 seconds:

However the question is WHERE along the path you need to walk to.

Well, you're asking a very irrelevant question. You can go on any segment of the path, and still reach at the same time. If S is at the very end of N (not the H side), then it would be easy to simply walk up, minimizing the time you walk through rough terrain. If you can go through all the rough terrain and enter right before the house, then you'll still take about the same time.

yes pie cut down the wheat to make into pie crust

Added after 3 minutes:

then go beat out the brains of your teacher for asking such a stupid and irrelevant question and use as your pie filling bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until golden brown at the edges let cool and enjoy

Added after 8 minutes:

if you think this question is hard wait till you go to college and you have to take quantum physics
DAMN YOU STRING THEORY!!!!!

Erm. This question is supposed to be fairly easy o.O

All you need to do is find when the derivative of the equation is equal to 0. All you need to do is find the equation, which isn’t that hard since you just need to use Pythagoras.

The answer is 42. As 42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything.
