I am fairly certain the war Doctor was not implied to be his original form. In fact I know it was not. And I don't know what he could be atoning for in his first life.

Ok, I checked a few websites, and it seems the show did definitely peak in the 70s.

Although, it was fairly pointed out that viewing habits are different these days, what with the internet and all.

That doesn't make any sense, sure it must have been popular in the Uk but it was no where near as popular as now with both the UK and America

Personally, I'm very optimistic about Capaldi's version. I'm more fond of Doctors who are more 'mature' and have a fatherly aspect than bishounens like Tennant and Smith.

I like the War Doctor, but why they didn't just use Paul Mcgann's 8th is beyond me. Moffat just loves complicating things like he always does.
