Yes, cell shading is what I am talking about. I just think that most of the time it looks really ugly with few exceptions. For example, in a mech series where all of the mechs are CGI that just tells me "We didn't have a very big budget so to save money we used CGI". The few exceptions I have seen that I can think of for machines, a couple are Eva and Avatar, but when you are using CGI the less noticeable it is the better so there are many series that manage to pull it off. The only series that uses cell shading for actual characters and does it well that I have seen is BRS. An example of it done badly is King of Thorn. Great movie but while I was watching I was thinking "Animated, CGI, animated, now back to CGI, animated again and now back to CGI." It was so noticeable it was a pain to look at. The first time they switched and I only noticed when I thought "Have the characters faces always looked so badly animated?" then it switched back to regular animation and I realised that any time something cell shaded appears, all the characters become cell shaded as well.
Some people shouldn't have an imagination. They just abuse it.
