Ayla will deal straight-nines with a regular attack, at level seventy. I had no trouble killing the crap out of lavos with her, on her own. Even at level fifty.
Magus was unable to compete.
But that's not even the reason I don't like him.
Magus and characters like him, (Such as Vincent Valentine) were invented so that people who had a misguided sense of cool would latch onto them, wholeheartedly. Because I mean, what could be cooler than an assholish and apathetic form of Bruce Willis (you know, in "Last Man Standing") who does nothing but say cryptic and DARK lines. And wear all darker colors (at least they didn't have him wear black) and then give him all sorts of DARK magic. And then on top of it, give him a weapon that is symbolic of death, but isn't a weapon at all. (It's essentially the same as arming him with a flower-pot.)
This is how kids acted in middle school when they were still shaking off the last of their 'Hey, let's use our IMAGINATIONS to play' phases.
To a kid, any brutish asshole will look cool, as long as he's glorified to the point of being a hero.
I rember when I was a kid, I wanted to be JUST like Mike Tyson, because nobody fucked with Mike. Mike Tyson was a raging asshole and he was mean to everybody, including his fans. Michael Jordan, however, who is a good and kind person, didn't get the same degree of respect from me.
Magus fits into this equation, because he is a characterological equivalent to Mike Tyson. I even liked using him when I first got him, (during play, I was in seventh grade) ...because I was a stupid crap-headed lameass middle-school kid.
But by the end of the game, I had matured a little (like... two weeks), and he was replaced by a nicer, kinder party. One involving Ayla, Marle and Crono.
(Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Crono, I was always afraid that romantic storyline elements would be skipped over if I didn't always have the main guy and his girl in the party at all times.)
So anyhow, there you have it. I don't think he's cool, because he was designed for the sole purpose of being cool to a childish perspective, and of course he was an asshole sadist fuck in the process.
But you've all met the people who try and emulate him.
Man, I've had to bust some serious heads because mofo's thought they could push me around with their "Magus Attitude."
I do not like being pushed around by idiots with some superiority complex. I only like being pushed around by hot chicks in bikini's.
