regardless, win-goo, mewtwo sucked dick and i think they'd prefer the opportunity to shoe-horn in some new generation pokemon. it'll either be a whole new pokemon or lucario will return. i don't see it going another way.
Basically almost all of the characters come and go only because of relevance. The only reason Olimar came into play was to show off his new game coming out. The reason they showed that Luigi was because that new Luigi game is also coming out.

Actually, Luigi stays because he's a staple of the company. His skills are the same as Mario, but at the same time they are considerably different. Unlike Toon Link and Link, those were pretty much the same.
Nintendo knows that people find Luigi far more interesting than Mario, he has a personality that people can really feel for and he is worth exploring. I know that the original cast will all be in for sure, so I'm expecting some CAPTAIN FALCON and Ness announcements soon. Most of the characters they end up dropping are usually characters that really don't have a unique moveset so play wise they're not missed. I mean Dr. Mario was in no way relative to any current games and he was in Melee.

Yea Luigi's rise in popularity is thanks to him not being a mascot and thus is allowed to have a personality. People would still like Mario the most if he wasnt the company's walking logo and a hand puppet with no life of it's own.
