Language Learning Resources

Postby Wulfespinndel » Tue Jan 14, 2014 2:11 am

Hey everyone. I'm in Community College right now, but I still have LOTS of time on my hands still. I'd like to devote this time to learn a language, though I'm not sure if I should finish what I've started with Japanese. That said, do any of you know any good language learning resources I can use? Some of the stuff I've found requires me to pay for higher levels of education, that's why I'm asking for help.

You could try Duolingo. A family member mentioned it to me back home and it's pretty interesting.

Heard of it. Nice to know it's free. Two things I wanna ask though, French or German? And secondly, does anyone here know any good places where I can learn Japanese online?

@Wulf: Hmmm hard to say. I tried French (got a C on it (don't judge)) and it's a great language, but needs a lot of time to understand (both speaking and writing). As for german... well, I never tried it but it looks hard, especially with the words.

I've heard from people that german is easier than the romance languages, because of the way you build sentences or something.

Well if I had the chance to learn another one, I would. For now, I'm stickin' with learnin' some Japanese.
It's pretty interesting to see how each language is from the other, how many there are and how these languages have been used for centuries.

I remember hearing that German is more lenient with combining words. I forgot the exact details, but I believe one could make up a word for CatDog, and it would be comprehensible.

Ich spreche gern Deutsch. Ich empfehle du lernst Deutsch.

Also I meet a lot of Germans online and I don't meet any French people. When I do meet someone they seem to be more insular. And I've heard American accents in German aren't half-bad either.
