Doesn't hurt to try though, takes like 7 minutes to write one up.

Even if they somehow stopped piracy, there are thousands of people out there with terabytes of data stored. All it would do is make stuff a little harder to find, encourage interpersonal data exchanges, and make new media spread more slowly.

Welp, as if censoring wasn't enough, I think American government made their intentions clear.

They have a new bill underway called S.1867
http://www.deathrattlesports.com/archiv ... e-support/
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:s.1867:

http://www.opednews.com/articles/S-1867 ... 2-678.html
Quote:
According to the definition under this amendment to the military appropriations bill, the nation will become a part of a world-wide "battle zone"." If this is signed into law, it will shred the remaining tenants of the Bill of Rights and unleash upon America a total military dictatorship, complete with secret arrests, secret prisons, unlawful interrogations and indefinite detainment without people ever being charged with a crime.

and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqJRol8l ... re=related go into it.

To censor everyone's lives. 1984 here we go.

The phrase "blatantly unconstitutional" comes to mind. If this makes it past the HR and the President, the Supreme Court would do something about it.

...That is, if the Supreme Court was allowed to rule in a trial involving this law. Which they can't, because the provisions of the law allow for it to be used exclusively in military trials.

Even without that provision it's unlikely the Supreme Court would be allowed to rule on this law, they'd all be arrested for threatening our freedom and security... oh the irony that would be.

Fen I've been saying that phrase since for a while cuz I have read the PATRIOT ACT so those bills only exist to allow open action upon what is said in the PATRIOT ACT.

So apparently Universal Music Group is using current youtube provisions catering to DMCA laws to take down videos they don't actually own. Also, they say they can't be sued because fuck you.

So, wait.

So Universal took down a video that was simply promoting MegaUpload? For pretty much no reason?

...When did my ex join Universal?

Dude, my brother plays LoL right, and then Riot just announced they're going against the bill. Companies besides Riot including Google and Reddit are participating in a blackout in response to the bill. What's awesome is that there's a Congressman who plays LoL and is standing with the gamers. This was just posted today too.

Quote:
Hi, this is Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado. As a member of the League of Legends community (partial to Anivia and Maokai), and as someone who made his living as an Internet entrepreneur before being elected to Congress, I’m greatly concerned about the future of the Internet and gaming if Congress doesn't wake up. You may have heard that Congress is currently considering a bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA. While SOPA has a ton of problems, there are some significant issues that I thought fellow gamers might want to know about.

I’m particularly concerned that SOPA might stifle the kind of innovation that brings us games we love, such as LoL. The bill makes it far too easy for angry competitors to sue good law abiding companies out of existence. It threatens any company or website that depends on user-generated content, even companies like Riot. Instead of coming up with great ways to keep making games like LoL even better, companies will have to spend their money hiring lawyers. That's why companies like Riot, who want to protect the games they create, are opposed to SOPA.

I’ve been working on alternative legislation that would protect the games companies create while also fostering innovation. But we also need you to call your members of Congress and let them know of your opposition to SOPA. This bill has a very real chance of passing, and it is up to all of who want to protect the Internet to take action. More information is available at http://keepthewebopen.com/. Please make your voices heard in this debate! I will be happy to respond to your posts below, and will check back every few hours today and respond to as many as I can.
