It does look like it feeds off the console to run games, etc. In the preview video they showed, where the dad came in and changed the channel to watch baseball while the kid switched to playing Mario on his Wii U pad, it looks like the Wii U console stayed on the whole time, streaming the game to the controller.

Oh I doubt it'll take more than a couple days, if that, for someone to pull that off, zeph. But to do that, they would have to throw a HDD into the thing to hold the OS, since I doubt it has much running in it besides the circuitry for the screen/control transmition.

They would probably go through the simm card or usb stick or some wonky converter depending on how Nintendo rolls with it. The Nintendotosh will be the new thing.

It's still just a controller. It's may very well lack a processor, ram and several other computer parts, or they may be far too weak to support anything else than their hardcoded purpose. It depends on to what degree the console just pre-processes all the data and sends the final pictures to the controller.

They still might be able to run the ios on the wii itself so that you get the same effect.

Seriously though, i am very pissed at how consoles (and handhelds) are getting really fucking hard to afford the more they develop them, i coud barely buy a DS four years ago and there is no way i will be able to afford something like the wii u, which judging by it's technology it will go AT LEAST for $400. I miss the SNES era, really.

Well, the SNES originally retailed for $200, and accounting for inflation, that's about $350 now. But yeah, it'll probably be more expensive then the Wii.

Sorry but no, there's no way it's going to cost that much. Nintendo's plan has always been to get the tech when the prices for it are low. Touchscreen tech is at a low point right now, which is exactly why Nintendo hit it when they did. To top it off, they probably own the rights to a lot of the tech thanks to the DS and have had ample time to make something cost-efficient. That's always always been Nintendo's key to building their consoles and it's also why they're always behind when it comes to next gen stuff like HD. The wholesale price of all the tech they're using now is WAY CHEAP. Triple-core processors at wholesale are a lot less than you might imagine, as well as the ATI GPU architecture they're using, even if it looks better than a PS3.

Add to this the fact that they have TONS of profit from selling Wiis over the last 5 years, they can shortchange themselves a little in hopes for bigger profit from the new system. I'm going to wager the console will cost somewhere in the range of $300-350 if that. I'm thinking they'll try to do what they can to stick it right at $299.

I'm a little out of the loop as to what this Wii U shit actually is.

The controller is a tablet, the touch screen mechanic is similar to to the DS.

The fuss is in it being the first console of the next generation. The one that'll replace the Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 age.

Oh god I would be an estaticly happy person if they got Tecmo to remake all the Fatal Frame games on the Wii U. And that game seems like a perfect match for the system. Still pissed off we didnt get Fatal Frame 4.

Is it just me, or has every single announcement Nintendo has made since E3 about the Wii U been pretty negative?

They seem to be very "Wait wait wait, guys, don't get too excited about our next console. It's not going to be that great."

They're simply talking about the horsepower of the system, which is a little better than the others but certainly not close enough to PC setups for hardcore, so it's not going to "wow" anyone in terms of looks and tech. At least not outside the controller itself. The fact is, there's not much more horsepower any of the systems can draw out anymore than they have right now. HD Graphics cant get any better than 1080p and all systems already support that, so what comes after that is realism (polygon count) in the effects and processing speed, both of which are nearly at their peak in PC gaming right now. DX11 already takes care of most of the realism with tessellation, which I do believe the Wii U will also be able to handle with it's custom GPU.

So yeah, Nintendo's not expecting to surprise people with specs, more that they just want developers to start doing something with their controller.

Don't get me wrong I like the wii u, and I like the things they are doing with it, but I'm just not as wowed by Nintendos offerings as by Sonys. Now PSVita on the other hand looks sexy. I might murder fuck a priest for one of those.
