Egyptian Protest Thread.

Postby Wulfespinndel » Sun Jan 30, 2011 2:07 am

Some footage you can watch here: http://www.youtube.com/citizentube

I'm still watching more footage, although its not from this channel. A good start for those who haven't heard about it yet.

Any thoughts on the current situation?

Oh, and by the way, Internet has gotten close to being cut off there. Fax machines and amateur radio communication seems to be one of the ways the Egyptians spread news about what's happening there. People (including Anonymous) are reaching out to help those people.

Sorry If this post is a bit disorganized.

Looking at how Egypt handled cutting off the internet in the light of protests I am concerned about laws that are in congress giving the president authority to do that here.

I'm paying attention to this as well, so far I'm wondering what kind of action we'll be taking in this. I'd find it odd if we did nothing at all given how we love to meddle.

We kind of have a full plate right now. I think we should keep an eye out and make sure things don't degenerate too far but remain mostly hands off. Let Egypt handle its own damn problems. Although we should make sure they don't start wrecking the history and art.

It's interesting because the army is basically with the people. They issued a statement yesterday that they would not fire on the protesters. I'm waiting for them to completely defect

Are they just protesting because they're sick to see Obarak's face or did he do something really stupid other than cutting the kids' MMO time?

Yeah, that, but that's not the only thing that pissed them off, right? Did he do other stupid things?

well, how about rigging every election for the last 30 years? Also using the police to beat and frighten anyone who spoke against his regime.

So, Mr. Mubarak is stepping down. This is a real big development.

I watched the protest in CCN.

Cairo got a shit storm-- Protesters throwing stones at each other. Lots of blood and crushed people. Military did nothing because they didn't want to get involved.

When protestors get impatient, they throw stones.

Either Mubarak steps down now or forced to step down and thrown to Hawaii...either way, he's fucked.

Sad, how the police, supposedly the protectors of the people, are used to such douchebaggery (that's a word). Once Mubarak steps down, the chiefs of police should get trialed.

Another question... if Mubarak gets the boot, who's going to replace him?

The police are there to protect public order, not the people. There is a difference.

It seems a portion of the army may be supporting the democracy pushers.

My parents say that this is a very similar situation as the one in Nicaragua, and that hopefully Egypt won't break out into a civil war.

I'd place money that Egypt becomes a helluva lot more moderate after all this. That'd go a ways to stabilizing the region.

Well, this wasn't what most people hoped for.

And yes I know the American government somewhat liked the Mubarak regime, but I meant normal people.

Also even US government seems to anticipate the regime might not be able to survive.

Well if history is any indication the military is going to be the ones who decide how this will proceed. And it will come down to who has more people and arms. If the military comes down on the side of the current regime there will be no real change, if the military comes down on the side of the people then Mubarak will likely have to step down. He isn't seeking reelection and elections are coming this September, I think the protesters are a bit unreasonable at this moment.

You gave me the image of Goro, Hatchi, or any other many-armed character fighting an army of armless Egyptians that attack by banging their heads.
