Quality Headphones

Postby Dark Dragon » Mon Nov 29, 2010 4:14 am

I'm in the market for some decent headphones. It's a pain to find a decent pair without trial and error and lots of disappointment. I'm in need of full size circumaural headphones that can deliver crisp sounds and deep base. I like to hear punch to my base. I mostly listen to rock, industrial, and electronic. My budget is about $60

I've had my Sony compact headphones for almost 6 months now. While the sound quality isn't the best, they do have a noise cancelling feature... that requires batteries obviously.

I listen to electronica 24/7 and honestly if I want the bass to be loud as fuck I just crank it up in my car with my zune plugged in via the aux. But the headphones are decent enough and won't damage your hearing. They cost me around $55. If you want more info I'll post it.

Last night after posting this thread I did some research on Head-Fi, an audiophile forum. I found that the Maxell DHP-II had very good reviews. Most said that they were quality, except for that they are flimsy, which doesn't matter to me since they'll be for home use. Some went as far to say they were comparable to $100+ headphones.

I'm curious to see the specs of your set though.

I have always liked the upper end sony headphones.

Although I break headphones far too easily for me to spend a large amount of money on another set.

I just recently bought a pair of Sony XB 500. My biggest complaints are they leak some sound after they break in and you actually need to run them on an equalizer because they have too much bass(down to about 4hz). But they are sturdy, comfortable for hours on end and through an equalizer have amazing frequency response.

these are bendable headphones. they bend in so many angles and the headphones themselves do an 180 degree turn so it's pretty hard to break them. trust me I also break headphones and earphones every 5 days

It's pretty amazing because those exact same headphones in Australia have an RRP of $149. So I stick with the lower end MDR-XD100 which aren't the flashiest but they were significantly cheaper and comfy as hell. I bought another pair when my first lot died, so there's that.

I guess my point is that the costs are so skewed that I am of no help. Sony is pretty great though.

Australia seems like the worst place to be when it comes to buying technology and video games haha.

Big recommendation: http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr60.htm

You might even find a pair of sr80i's for 60~ with some looking, but the 60 are probably easier.

Basically one of the best makes of headphones you can buy that exist.

They do not, however, shut out sound, so they're totally useless for that, if you're really picky about not having outside sound interfering with your listening.

For that, I've found: http://www.accessoryjack.com/-strse-183 ... Detail.bok

It work well. Suppresses most ambient noise. Just a smidge over your price range.

I'm sure the other recommendations work fine though. I have a thing about insisting on dedicated audio companies though.

You could always set up an import export company in the United States and Austrailia Ship items from the US to yourself in Austrailia. Pay the Duty tax and capitalize on the Arbitrage.
