This is something that had been happening for a while, so I figured I'd bring it up since I've been posting in this thread a lot.

Sometimes when my laptop restarts, the clock falls behind by 2 hours. When I change it back, the "Apply" button does not raise and I can only select "OK."

I'm just going to throw out another option, use a hammer.

Though it probably is something stupid like time zone setting.

I changed the time zone, but it still won't "apply."

Also, I performed a clean sometime ago and it switched from AM/PM to military. I dunno if I can change it back.

I figured out the problem, but there is another. To be able to use the trial of MS Office, you need to register the program so the trial starts. Problem is that everytime I try to register it, the connection fails and it won't let me do it.... fucking Word.

I would just install open office like zepherin suggested It's probably the best and cheapest solution http://www.openoffice.org/

If I am correct, netbooks does not have a dvd drive(because of space issue's ) which makes me go on the bigger laptop. I am leaning on acer or HP but I do not know if the two make good laptops or there are better brands then those that I mentioned, or if these two brand will ever fit my Can. $500 allowance.

So which are good brands for laptop?

Just to confirm something, if I get a wireless router can I still run an ethernet cable into it? Or are they wireless exclusively?

Most have ethernet ports built in.

Too be honest, I have never seen a router without them, just read the box and it should say the number of ports.

Well they should all have at least 1 port to connect to the modem. And every wireless router I have seen has at least 4 ethernet ports, but check the specs first it should say.

Typically Wireless routers are 4-port ethernet switches + wireless router. So it should be fine. Check the packaging.

As for laptops: ASUS, Toshiba, Sony, Dell. In my opinion of course.

Netbooks (Though you sound like you want/need something larger) are pretty much all the same hardware wise though, and you're paying for: battery life, style, features.

Define free.

I have used looknstop and Jetico and liked them but without creative licensing your SOL after 30 days

But really most routers have built in hardware firewalls and windows has it's own software firewall. It does a good enough job for most things. If your in a situation of paranoia, you might want to try the above or go with zone alarm if you want real free. Might as well hit your hard drive with truecrypt too for the super level of paranoia.

I just use Windows Firewall to be honest. At this point the built-in firewall serves the purpose nicely, so unless you want to pay money I wouldn't bother.

Install and run it. It will tell you what is passing fine as well as how many errors certain subsystems are getting.

Okay, will this determine why my computer is lagging? It says I should back-up all of my files, so I wanna make sure it will do some good first.

If it's a hardware problem it should let you know what is causing the errors or lagging behind, yes. If it comes up with nothing and there doesn't seem to be any obvious hardware issues then backup and reload Windows.

Always back up, though.

Actually, in my opinion the three best (Free) antiviruses are:
- Avast!
- Avira
- Microsoft Security Essentials (Seriously)

AVG is alright but has lagged behind recently. Avast! was getting kinda meh and I considered switching to Avira or MSSE but the new version (5) is wow-good and fast.

Also, believe it or not but the newest versions of Norton are pretty good. Too bad they've got too much of a history for me to trust them again.

But yeah, those three are pretty much kings of the free realm with MSSE sitting at the top at this moment.

TL;DR get MSSE.

Most antiviruses require too much system juice for my tastes. Avast and Trend Micro are probably the fastest in terms of not being resource hogs.
