Is there a better way to do thumbnails (I'm using html) rather than uploading a seperate, pre-made, small version of the picture??

Well I mean you have to look at the question being asked. its like saying "Is there a better way to make a wheel thats no so wheel like?" A thumbnail IS a seperate smaller version of the picture that keeps people from having to download the whole thing.

i though there might be some trick to were the browser downloads some smaller/worse quality version of the picture, like <img src="http://whatever/ thumb="80-80">. How do sites make thumbnails... ah, what i mean, is for instance an art server. A person uploads a picture (never a thumbnail of it), but in the archive or whatever, there is a thumb of it. How do they do that then?

I can only think of three things here, but none are perfect:

1. There is a way to tell a browser to only load PART of an image using an image map like structure. Basicall say your image is 100X100 pixels, you can tell it to load the first 25X25.

2. You can specify how big you want an image to appear, this would let you put many small pictures on a single page, but they would still take just as long to load.

3. You can tell graphics to load interlaced, where basically the first row of pixels is visible, the second is not, the third is, etc. This is a REALLY old switch, you'll have to search online in outdated HTML guides or go to your local library and check out a book thats back in the days of like HTML 3 or 2. They MAY have discontinued this switch because so many people have broadband now, but I don't know for sure.

Server software. I know there used to be a website you uploaded a picture to and it created a ascii colored version of said picture. So its something they have on the server processing the picture and saving it as a thumbnail.

I think PHP has a thumbnail function somewhere... I remember seeing a tutorial about it once or twice... I haven't needed it yet, so I really haven't looked.
