The people are just repeating the nonsense that they were taught.

Which is why its the people, not the religion that is the problem. They're making wild accusations and remarks over things not in their control which also goes against their doctrine. While you may hear sermons and lessons regarding signs of the end of the world being taught (which considering Revelation and Isiah depend on a lot of allegories and symbolism which few get it right), its usually odd splinter groups that proclaim a definite date without any "real" authority.

I believe it's also the religion's problem. Yes, people = shit, but as it turns out no religion works if there's no shit that follows it. It's said religion's leaders who do nothing to dissuade people from actually believing that stuff who are making religion disappear altogether (cuz even the most idiotic people will end up getting fed up if religious leaders continue to spit bullshit upon bullshit). It involves religion because it directly affects it (for the religions that predict a doomsday scenario).
