 Re: General Chat Thread
Heads up don't install AVG Free 9.0 on Windows 7 it really messes things up.
Luckily uninstalling remedies all issues.

Luckily uninstalling remedies all issues. Hmm, I should try that. Evil slowdowns are evil.

Luckily uninstalling remedies all issues. Install Avast! or Avira instead.

So the first question goes there are a lot of ram configurations that are higher than DDR3 1333, but the motherboards almost always preface that with Overclocking, is 1333 the highest you can go without O.C? The second question. Is there any real performance increase associated with triple channel memory vs dual channel? I'll take a shot. Haven't done this in a while so I may make a fool of myself. Question 1: no clue though I've never really seen OCing as a bad thing, then again I have liquid cooling so I don't have to worry about any heat issues. Question 2: I believe the increase in performance comes from having multiple data access points. I believe it's somewhat like when they added threading to processors. It just allows the memory to handle more data at one time. Are there any advantages to those over say McAfee?(I get McAfee free from work so money isn't a factor)

Now I've got it set to randomly change the background image every five minutes out of a folder supplemented with a bunch of character images from http://www.creativeuncut.com/

 Re: General Chat Thread
Go me for missing posts! I've bolded important bits, skim the rest if you want. ninnypants wrote: Are there any advantages to those over say McAfee?(I get McAfee free from work so money isn't a factor) I get better results from Avast! than I ever have from McAfee and it seems to use noticeably less resources to boot. Avira has been ranked as the best you can get recently though I haven't tested it myself so YMMV. McAfee has just seemed lacklustre from my experience. Great by its own, pales in comparison. zepherin wrote: I have 2 questions. I am building someone a computer and ordering the parts. So the first question goes there are a lot of ram configurations that are higher than DDR3 1333, but the motherboards almost always preface that with Overclocking, is 1333 the highest you can go without O.C? The second question. Is there any real performance increase associated with triple channel memory vs dual channel? 1) I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. I'm going to interpret it as "If I buy 1600MHz RAM but my mobo says it only supports 1333MHz will it run as 1600?" The short answer is no. The long answer is as follows. If the board natively supports (I'm guessing) 1066 then that's what it will run as. What most boards will do now though is, through the magic of electronics, detect RAM in it that can run at a higher frequency (1333) and fiddle with the FSB settings, and RAM divider and all sorts of other trickery to get the RAM running at it's specified rating while not overclocking the CPU (Or anything else, for that matter). So what will happen is that you can chuck 1333MHz RAM into a board that supports 1066MHz plus 1333 through overclocking and it'll run at 1333MHz. You do not need to know how this works, it just does.In this case it sounds like the board will natively support 1333 stuff (As any decent DDR3 board is wont to do). Chucking anything higher in will just have it sit at 1333. The real question is, "Will they notice and/or care?" My gut says no. I've yet to meet anyone that isn't a super-hardcore gamer/techie/nerd that can tell the difference between the speeds. What higher rated RAM will get you, though, is the removal of a bottleneck. If you try to overclock and it just won't and no matter of dividers will solve it (And you know the RAM is the bit choking) then higher rated/better stuff will do the trick. But honestly? If you aren't overclocking just get 1333MHz stuff for a 1333MHz board. You won't care, and if they want better stuff it's cheap as chips. Chucking more RAM in is going to do a whole lot more than worrying about the frequency (Or CAS timings if you're über nerdy). 2) Lots of hearsay and whatnot, but the bottom line is that at this point in time it makes no real difference at all. By the time it's really important you'll probably want a new system or not care.ninnypants wrote: Well I just got my first BSOD on windows 7 hopefully this isn't very common. Re: General Chat Thread
Thanks yoshi, it has been a while since I have had to build a computer and things are not quite as straight forward as mobo ram and cpu all match up socket wise and they act funny if you don't match up FSB. Although I am pleased that the socket sets do not require me to use a screw driver as a lever and the fucking cpu as fulcrum to get the damned heat sync and fan on. I was convinced I was going to crack the cpu once.
Thank you too ninnypants.

Thank you too ninnypants. For the most part it really is just a matter of whacking the stuff in. I build many different computers with many different parts and the only times I've had problems are when I've tried putting a Core2 or something into a 775 board that only supports Pentium D or lower. If it's new hardware the only time you need to check the numbers is for performance versus cost analysis. As an interesting side note, the Front Side Bus no longer exists in new systems. Indeed, they haven't for a while on AMD systems. By definition of it, the FSB is the bus that gets the CPU talking to the Northbridge (Memory Controller). For a long time (And Intel has it now, too) AMD has had its Northbridge on-chip. So, now that Intel has done this (On the new Core i# series), on Intel systems you're looking for the QPI which is the new on-chip bus. Don't ask me why they wanted a new name, they just did.

Oh my gosh. I love Jon Stewart so much. I haven't laughed that hard since the S4 Venture Brothers premiere. I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. His entire second segment was a near 10 minute parody of Glenn Beck.

Good Gracious. Dragon Age is fucking BRUTAL. And that's with the recent patch that was supposed to make it easier, . I've been fighting this single stupid Ogre about 6 times, and can't beat it. No matter how I mix my tactics. It just decimates me.

Almost everyone you play against is always Jin or Ragna, they have no sense of challenge I'm guessing, but when I go Rachel they all get jumpy and I zap the fuck outta them with Sword Iris and George.

I played Blaz Blue at a convention this weekend. 'Tis fun, I must say. Too bad I don't own either of those consoles.
